Abbeyfield
is a charitable organisation which
provides
accommodation
for
elderly people in friendly
houses accommodating a variable number of
residents according to house
size.
Abbey field was
founded in 1956 and began with a house in Bermondsey. Now
the National
Society includes over 600 autonomous local societies responsible for
about 950
houses accommodation about 9000 residents

The society tries to give elderly residents of every background, a way of life which is a balance of privacy and companionship. Many people grow up in the companionship of a family group and their lives develop from the strength and security which that group gives them. However, when people grow older many find that they no longer have this personal which that group gave them.
Abbeyfield houses offer a "home within a home" to those who, though reasonably fit for their years, nevertheless feel they would be happier living in a "supportive environment".
Abbeyfield allows individuals to enjoy the companionship of others, together with privacy and security, without the concern of running a home.

New Market Street. The house has recently been refurbished and provides

The house, which
has pleasant gardens to the rear, is situated in the heart of the town, with all
